Threads 101: What You Need to Know about the New Social Media App
Blog written by: Derington "Jack" Ketchum
If you’re plugged into the social media scene, chances are you’ve heard about the new social media app from Meta, the tech company founded by Mark Zuckerberg that also owns Facebook and Instagram.
Threads—Meta’s new social network—is an app that seems to have been created as direct competition for the other popular, text-based social media platform, Twitter, following a few months of Twitter-related controversy.
Threads launched earlier this month on July 5th and has quickly become the fastest-growing social media platform in history, with over 100 million active users as of July 10th (nearly ⅓ of Twitter’s current active users).
Now, many people are wondering whether to stick with Twitter as its user-base declines, or switch over to the up-and-coming Threads. If you’re thinking about making the switch yourself, this post should have everything you need to know to get started.
What is Threads?
If you’ve used either Twitter or Instagram, then making the switch to Threads should be relatively simple. The function of the app emulates Twitter, as users are invited to share their thoughts, opinions, and ideas with their followers and the rest of the world.
Additionally, communities can use the app as a space for discussion about topics of interest, and users can follow their favorite creators and celebrities to stay up-to-date on the latest happenings—sound familiar?
Chances are the app will look familiar, too. The UI for Threads resembles Instagram, but allows for posts to be made without also requiring an image (but users still have the option to post images, videos, and GIFs).
How to Make the Switch to Threads:
The process of making a Threads account is incredibly straightforward. You’ll be able to create an account in less than a few minutes, and the Threads auto-follow feature allows you to follow every account you currently follow on Instagram.
This means that you’ll be able to set up the app and start deploying content within the same afternoon, and the auto-follow feature is a two-way street. Every account that follows you that elects for the auto-follow feature will instantly follow you on their new Threads account, which makes building your Threads following a breeze.
What’s My Marketing Strategy for Threads?
As you begin your Threads journey, it’s important to note that Threads does not currently support ads, but that may change in the future. Otherwise, you can begin using your Threads account in the same way that you’ve used your brand’s Twitter account.
Starting out, it might be a good idea to use some of your most engaging posts from other platforms. Since Threads is a predominantly text-based app, written content might not be a bad way to get your brand’s account sailing on the new platform, but feel free to start working in your brand’s multimedia content as soon as you feel comfortable.
Overall, everything is still pretty fresh on Threads, so experiment with your approach and see what works for you and your business. Remember that the app is founded on discussion and genuine connections, so use this new beginning as an opportunity to show Threads what your brand is all about!
